In manufacturing a printed circuit board applying the surface finish is one of the last steps. After the solder mask process on a hard gold PCB the surface finish is typically applied. It is basically designed so that it can prevent oxidation of the remaining exposed copper. Whereas the majority of the circuitry is covered by the solder mask. This is necessary because oxidized copper cannot be soldered. In very rare occasions, when a printed circuit board needs body gold, prior to the solder mask process this surface finish is applied to the copper. Gold finishes are more expensive because when the times comes for printed circuit board assembly, the consistent finish is worth the extra cost more especially for designs that need a tight surface mount.
