An international, non-proprietary standard called Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) outlines the protocols that are used to make it easier for medical images and related data to be exchanged in healthcare systems. The five primary purposes of the DICOM standard in medical imaging are to support digital imaging workflows, transmit and persist images and related data between endpoints, query and retrieve files, perform specific actions like printing or archiving, provide high-quality images for diagnostics, and all of the above.
DICOM enables cross-vendor interoperability between imaging devices and digital imaging software. For instance, it enables the archiving and evaluation of images produced by one vendor's scanner on another vendor's viewing device using software developed by a different vendor. In order to prevent user error during the collection, transmission, and processing of image data, DICOM services must be used. In urgent trauma cases, a quicker turnaround between a procedure and the evaluation of the image data is essential.
