When two objects, most commonly shafts, are joined together by a universal joint, relative rotation in two axes is possible. These two revolute joints have axes that are both parallel and intersecting. Shafts that have been joined together by a universal joint end in revolute joints whose axis is perpendicular to the rotating axis of the shaft. This permits rotational motion to be transmitted across the shafts while also allowing for two more rotational degrees of freedom to be misaligned.
