Definition
------------
A condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high.
Usually hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120.
A persistent elevation of the diastolic blood pressure above an arbitrary level of 90mm of mercury is defined as hypertension. It is usually associated with changes in the retinal blood vessels which can be seen on ophthalmoscopic examination. In 90% cases no definite cause can be found to account for the elevated blood pressure. These cases are labelled as essential hypertension. Psychological stress and heredity are thought to play some part in the genesis of essential hypertension. The remaining 10% cases, where definite cause for hypertension can be found, are due to renal diseases (Chronic pyelonephritis, Polycystic kidneys), endocrine diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, drugs and toxaemia of pregnancy.
Hypertension is classified as benign and malignant. Uncontrolled hypertension may lead to various complications.

Signs and symptoms

- It may be symptomless.
- Headache.
- Chest pain.
- High BP (Systolic > 160mm Hg, Diastolic > 90mm Hg)
- Left ventricular hypertrophy.

Antihypertensive effects:
Acupuncture can decrease BP in hypertensive patients. Acupuncture has the potential to lower blood pressure in patient with hypertension. Acupuncture induced inhibition of high BP occurs through the activation of the path way in the afferent, central, and efferent path ways. Acupuncture also activates distinct brain regions under conditions of hypertension caused by an imbalance between the sympathetic and para sympathetic systems.
