Shoulder arthroplasty is the surgical management of various kinds of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff injuries, impingement syndrome, traumatic injury, post-traumatic instability, failed anterior dislocation and fracture-dislocation of the humeral head. These lesions affect mainly young people with extensive damage to the articular cartilage.

They present severe pain and dysfunction in shoulder movement. The usual treatment involves one or more prostheses which must be fixed to the bone using several screws. Unfortunately, most patients who require this type of surgery have poor physical condition and obesity.
