Metamorphic soapstone, often called steatite, contains magnesium-rich talc in concentrations ranging from 60% to 70%. Various countries, including Brazil and India, provide architectural-grade soapstone composed of 30% soapstone and 50% mineral talc. Soapstone countertops get their characteristically mild, somewhat dry, soapy texture from this composition. Most of its surface is grey, but it is spotted with veins of various colors, including blue, brown, white, and green. Soapstone countertops are occasionally blended with quartz to get the perfect combination of hardness and softness.
