Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust. As a mineral, quartz refers to a specific chemical compound—silicon dioxide (silica, SiO₂)—with a distinctive hexagonal crystalline structure. It is present in all types of rock: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. Quartz is highly resistant to both physical and chemical weathering. When quartz-bearing rocks undergo weathering and erosion, the durable quartz grains are often concentrated in soils, riverbeds, and beaches.
