While archaeological evidence is scarce, it appears that Neolithic peoples in Europe were weaving linen textiles as early as 36,000 years ago. Linen is a flax-based textile that is mostly utilised in the production of homeware and clothing. While linen resembles cotton, it is created from fibres taken from the flax plant's stems rather than the bolls that grow around cotton seeds. Unlike cotton, which retains moisture for an extended period of time, linen dries fast, reducing heat retention in too hot temperatures. In hot and humid areas, linen garments are preferred.
