Gandhi’s racism
Gandhi arrived in South Africa in 1893 as a lawyer for an Indian merchant. He spent 21 years in that colony. Most of Gandhi’s actions and words during his time in South Africa were anti-Black.

He rose to prominence in colonial South Africa not through his anti-racist activism but because of his efforts to reconfigure existing race hierarchies to the benefit of his people.

Gandhi was adamant that there were separate entrances for black and white people at the Durban postal office. This was one of his first battles after arriving in South Africa. Gandhi protested against the “classification” of Indians in South Africa, which he called “kaffirs”, and demanded an entrance for Indians.

Gandhi stressed the Indo-Aryan connections between the Indian and European peoples during his time in South Africa. He argued that the British empire should treat Indians with more respect than Black Africans because of this historical connection.
