Intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are both fertility treatments, but they work differently and are used in different situations.
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination):
1. IUI is a simpler and less invasive procedure.
2. This involves placing washed and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation.
3. The goal is to increase the number of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes, where fertilization can occur naturally.
4. IUI is often recommended for mild male infertility, unexplained infertility, or cervical mucus problems.
5. It is less expensive than IVF and usually requires no or minimal use of fertility drugs.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization):
1. IVF is a more complex process.
2. It involves stimulating the ovaries with fertility drugs to produce multiple eggs, retrieving these eggs, and fertilizing them with sperm in the laboratory.
3. The resulting embryos are cultured for a few days and then transferred to the uterus.
IVF is used for a variety of infertility problems, including blocked fallopian tubes, severe male infertility, and failed IUI attempts.
4. It is more expensive and involves several steps, including hormone injections, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer.
In short, IUI is a simple, less expensive procedure used for mild fertility problems, while IVF is more complex and expensive, suitable for more serious infertility problems.
