In order to give students the academic standards necessary for a solid foundation in engineering, B Tech Colleges in India require four years of attendance, the first of which is devoted to basic studies and the review of intermediate-level courses. Because they are familiar with the basic engineering concepts that make up the first year's B Tech syllabus, diploma holders are exempt from having to repeat the first year of the program.
