For import export code registration, the following are the processes:
1. First, you must get a sole proprietorship registered with the city's local authority (municipal or panchayat), depending on the town where you reside.
2. Apply for GST (which is free). The process takes about a week. Apply for a current account at a nationalised bank and an AD bank. It can take upto three days.
3. When the account is set, it is time to request an official letterhead from your bank, addressed to the DGFT director or regional director. Inform the bank personnel that you're applying for IEC. They will send you the template. This certificate is required from the bank to use for IEC.
