When it comes to purchasing and trading collectible and custom knives, I'd love to say, 'it's all good, just go buy one.' Perhaps purchase a dozen, as it often yields positive outcomes, but we intuitively understand that life is not always perfect.
Two crucial aspects for achieving satisfaction in custom knife collecting are accurately assessing the quality of a custom knife and effectively managing the financial aspects of collecting.
Let's begin by exploring the category of knife quality known as 'fit and finish,' which refers to how clean and tight the various components of a knife are. The cost of fitness and completion can differ. It is reasonable to anticipate some mistakes on a $100 knife, but these errors would not be acceptable on a more expensive $300 knife.
As you progress to the mid-range, the quality of the knives should be exceptional, and any mistakes should be minimal or easily concealed. At the top level, there is an expectation that there will be minimal or no mistakes, ensuring a flawless outcome.
A custom knife consists of various components that must be securely joined together. A good knife should not have any spaces on the handle between the scales and tang. The handle material should seamlessly connect with the bolsters or guard, without any visible gaps or lines.
