An IV cannula consists of a small, flexible tube placed into a vein to facilitate direct access to the bloodstream. In hospitals and clinics, IV cannulas are used for the administration of fluids, medications, nutrients, and several other uses. An IV cannula catheter stands as an essential medical tool used in emergencies, as well as for prolonged treatment. Insertion of this cannula into a vein is called IV cannulation and should be performed by very trained staff to take care of the patient's safety. The most commonly used in the healthcare setting is the IV cannula with wings and a port. The wings serve to fix the device onto the skin, while the port acts as a gateway to administer additional medications without having to pierce the patient once again.
