A D-dimer test is a blood test that monitors, checks for, blood-clotting problems. This test measures the amount of D-dimer, a kind of protein the body produces to break down a blood clot.
Blood clots form whenever a blood vessel is damaged, whether that’s by an injury or or when blood flow is restricted, such as by a vessel being compressed for a long time. D-dimer is normally undetectable in the blood but it is produced when the body is trying to break down a blood clot. But if the blood clotting condition persists even when it is not required then it can be very dangerous. If you have such a disorder, a D-dimer Test will reveal it.
Blood clots generally develop due to damaged blood vessels, which can happen due to several reasons, including serious injuries, surgeries, pregnancy, cancers, and immune system illnesses. The process for the D-Dimer test is similar to a conventional blood test, quick and painless, although you might feel a pinch when the needle pierces the skin.
