Kidney shrinkage also referred to as renal atrophy is a condition that causes the kidneys to decrease in terms of size. There are many reasons that could be the reason for the shrinking of kidneys, such as:
Chronic kidney disease: CKD is a chronic condition that causes the kidneys to become dysfunctional over a period of time. This means that the kidneys can shrink in size.
Renal arterial stenosis: It is an illness in which the blood vessels that carry blood to the kidneys begin to smaller, resulting in less blood flow towards the kidneys. It can lead to the kidneys to shrink.
Polycystic kidney disorder: PKD is a genetic disorder in which cysts that are filled with fluid develop in the kidneys. These cysts may cause kidney swelling. But, in certain cases, the cysts can result in damage to the tissue of the kidneys, which can lead to a reduction in kidney size.
Other disorders: Other issues that cause shrinkage of the kidney are kidney infection, kidney stones as well as autoimmune conditions.
The signs of shrinking kidneys differ based on the reason and could be accompanied by:
Increased output of urine
Inflammation in the legs and ankles
Fatigue
Nausea or vomiting
High blood pressure
Treatment for Kidney shrinkage:
The treatment of kidney shrinkage is dependent on the root reason. In certain cases, like CKD or PKD the treatment could focus on tackling symptoms and slowing down the progression of the illness.
