How to get Canada PR — Step by Step Process

Canada is one of the most popular destinations for immigrants who want to live and work in a developed country with a high quality of life. Canada offers various pathways for skilled workers, family members, entrepreneurs, refugees and others to obtain permanent residence (PR) status and enjoy the benefits of being a Canadian citizen.

PR status allows you to live, work and study anywhere in Canada, access social benefits and health care, and apply for citizenship after meeting the eligibility criteria. PR status does not expire, but you need to meet certain residency obligations to maintain it.

There are different programs and streams under which you can apply for PR, depending on your skills, education, work experience, language ability, family ties and other factors. Some of the most common programs are:

Express Entry: This is an online system that manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). You need to create an online profile and enter your personal information, education, work experience, language test results and other details. You will be given a score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and placed in a pool of candidates. Every few weeks, the Canadian government invites a certain number of candidates with the highest scores to apply for PR. You will have 60 days to submit your complete application online with all the required documents and fees.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): This is a program that allows provinces and territories to nominate candidates who meet their specific labour market needs and economic development goals. Each province and territory has its own PNP streams and criteria. You can apply for PNP in two ways: either directly to the province or territory of your choice, or through Express Entry. If you apply through Express Entry, you need to create an online profile and indicate your interest in a specific province or territory. If you are nominated by a province or territory, you will receive an additional 600 points in your CRS score, which will increase your chances of getting an invitation to apply for PR.

Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP): This is a program that allows Quebec to select its own skilled workers based on its own criteria and priorities. You need to apply directly to Quebec and meet the requirements of its point system. You also need to obtain a Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ) from Quebec before applying for PR to the federal government.
Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP): This is a program that allows employers in the four Atlantic provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador) to hire foreign workers who have a job offer from them and meet other criteria. You need to have a valid job offer from a designated employer in one of the Atlantic provinces and obtain an endorsement letter from the province before applying for PR.

Caregiver Program: This is a program that allows foreign workers who have provided care for children, elderly or people with medical needs in Canada to apply for PR. You must also meet additional standards and have at least two years of recent full-time career experience in Canada.

Start-up Visa Program: This is a program that allows entrepreneurs who have an innovative business idea and support from a designated organization in Canada to apply for PR. You need to have a letter of support from a designated angel investor group, venture capital fund or business incubator in Canada and meet other criteria.

Self-employed Program: This is a program that allows people who have relevant experience in cultural or athletic activities or farm management to apply for PR. You need to demonstrate your ability and intention to be self-employed in Canada and contribute significantly to the cultural or athletic life or the agricultural sector of Canada.

Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot: This is a program that allows smaller communities in rural and northern regions of Canada to attract and retain foreign workers who can fill their labour shortages and support their economic development. You need to have a job offer from an employer in one of the participating communities and meet other criteria.

Agri-Food Pilot: This is a program that allows foreign workers who have experience in specific agri-food industries and occupations to apply for PR. You need to have a job offer from an employer in one of the eligible industries and occupations and meet other criteria.
