Treatment is guided by observation based on the size of the blockage and the amount of scar tissue present. One treatment option is urethral dilation, which involves widening the urethra with a dilation tool and cystoscope.
Internal urethrotomy, in which the cystoscope is used in conjunction with a specific instrument to cut through the ring of scar tissue and open the area of obstruction. If dilation or urethrotomy fails and the stricture recurs, urethral reconstruction is usually necessary. Urethroplasty, or surgical reconstruction of the urethra, is generally considered a permanent treatment.
