If you have at least one Canadian parent born abroad, you may already be eligible for Canadian citizenship.
Once you are eligible for citizenship, you no longer need to go through the normal application process. This includes requirements such as physical presence requirements as a permanent resident, knowledge tests and attendance at citizenship ceremonies.
Instead, ask for proof of citizenship, also known as a certificate of citizenship.
Unless you were born as a foreign diplomat, you may already be a Canadian citizen if you were born in Canada. If you were born abroad, you may already be Canadian if at least one of your parents was a first-generation Canadian at birth.
To be considered a first-generation Canadian, parents must have been born in Canada or have obtained citizenship through an application process. If your grandfather was first-generation Canada and your father obtained citizenship by descent, he is not eligible to take the citizenship test.
