A patient is usually referred to a cardiologist because a potential problem has been diagnosed by their primary care physician. The cardiologist will sit down with the new patient, look at their medical history, check their current physical condition, ask their heart if there are any abnormalities, and talk about any related symptoms. They will also perform a series of tests for accurate diagnoses, such as EKG, x-rays, stress tests, biopsies, and blood tests.
Non-invasive cardiologists - will examine patients, perform cardiology consultations, and organize and explain tests (stress tests or electrocardiograms). They will determine the best way to treat patients with medications, lifestyle changes, or a combination of both. If necessary, they refer patients to a cardiac surgeon.
Interventional Cardiologists - Treat patients with coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, and peripheral vascular disease. They perform angioplasty and stent placement, embolic care, antrectomy procedures, and mitral valve repair.
Non-interventional cardiologists - will perform the same tests and exams as a non-invasive cardiologist, but may perform smaller operations such as catheterization (the process of detecting blocked arteries). If a blockage is found, the patient will be referred to an interventional cardiologist.
Electrophysiology cardiologists - or cardiology specialists, place pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization devices under the skin for sensation, speed, and traumatic delivery. They will perform removal procedures to treat heart rhythm disorders, as well as administer the necessary medications.
There are other physicians who specialize in heart problems, such as cardiothoracic surgeons, but it is good to note that they are not considered cardiologists.
Cardiothoracic surgeons perform surgery on patients recommended by a cardiologist and have completed a surgical residency program, not an inpatient residency like a cardiologist. They perform complex surgeries such as heart bypass and transplant surgery.
