This has long been a feature of board games, albeit through the decades these board games have employed various techniques to achieve this result. In the technological age of today, the majority of games have a battery-operated timer that functions very similarly to an egg timer. By turning a knob, the clock counts down until the time limit is reached, at which point it will beep or ring to notify players that the time limit has expired. These electrical timers weren't as popular in the past, though, and most board games came with a sand timer for recording scores.
