It once served as a summer retreat for the British after its discovery by John Chesson who is the founder of Panchgani. At present the hill station is endowed with colonial cottages, a cool and lull ambience, woody places and dense, moist forests.
During the colonial times, the British are accredited in introducing many different plant species like silver oaks and poinsettia that add to the enthralling beauty of the place. Panchgani is situated among five hills, hence came the name Panchgani (Panch – five, gani – hills).
