Konark Sun Temple - Odisha
This temple is truly a marvel, with its 12 pairs of intricately carved stone wheels, each measuring three meters wide. As you enter, you can still catch a glimpse of the lion's throne, although it is now in fragments. The exquisite carvings reveal that this place was dedicated to the worship of Surya. It's amazing to think that our ancestors in the 13th century had such advanced knowledge and skills to create such incredible mechanisms. The design of the wheels and sculptures not only showcases their craftsmanship but also their foresight in protecting the temple from the ravages of time and weather.
One of the most remarkable features is the hydraulic system used to pump water up to the tower for rituals, demonstrating the ingenuity of the skilled artisans. And can you believe they even used magnets to move heavy materials? It's mind-blowing! Although the main idol of Surya is no longer present, historical records mention that it used to float in the air, supported by magnets that attracted the surrounding stone. Just thinking about it fills us with awe for the incredible artistic talents of those who built this temple.
