Good laser pointer range

The eyes perceive green most brightly.
The red (or long wave) laser is very little scattered by the air, making it very difficult to see the beam itself. In return, they have a wider range, but it's not really interesting.

Blue is most strongly scattered by the air, but is not so bright to the eye. It's almost balanced.

Laser pointer The strongest "range" is not a fixed term. It can mean anything. If you can barely see the laser point on a white sheet 1 km away, that doesn't mean you can't hit someone's eyes within 10 km.

Small laser pointers always use infrared laser diodes. Infrared laser diodes produce green light by doubling the frequency. For very cheap laser pointers, some laser beams are relatively powerful and invisible because the infrared component may not be filtered out. That's impossible from a security standpoint!
