The temple is situated around a man made pool which was constructed by Guru Ram Das in the year 1577. The temple was rebuilt many times by the Sikhs after it was repeatedly destroyed by the Afghanistan invaders and the Mughal rulers. The temple was later rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh who overlaid the temple’s sanctum with gold plates. Hence it came to be called as the Golden temple.
