An astounding natural marvel, they extend over a distance of 3 Km and hang 2,400 feet above rivers. These ancient bridges, woven from living roots, possess remarkable durability, withstanding heavy monsoon floods and growing stronger over time. For centuries, it has served as a reliable means of crossing the river, strong enough to hold 50 or more people in one go. These unique Living Root Bridges are cultivated by the skilled Khasi and Jaintia tribes of Meghalaya, masters of the art of cultivating these bridges over streams within the dense forests. They meticulously manipulate the thick roots of rubber trees, scientifically known as Ficus elastica, to create these living structures.
