Message of Congressman Celso Regencia for Remembering The Bravery and Sacrifice of the SAF 44

On this solemn day, the Congressional Office of Iligan City joins the entire nation in commemorating the anniversary of the Mamasapano Encounter, a tragic yet heroic moment in Philippine history that claimed the lives of 44 members of the Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police (PNP). These brave men, known as the SAF 44, made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of justice, peace, and national security. As we remember their heroism, we extend our deepest respect, admiration, and gratitude to these fallen heroes, especially our very own Iliganons, PO2 Romeo Senin II and PO2 Chum Agabon.

The Mamasapano Encounter, which occurred on January 25, 2015, in the municipality of Mamasapano, Maguindanao, was a counterterrorism operation that led to one of the most significant and tragic losses in recent Philippine military and law enforcement history. The mission, codenamed "Oplan Exodus," aimed to neutralize the Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Abdhir, also known as Marwan, a high-profile bomb maker affiliated with Jemaah Islamiyah. While the operation successfully led to Marwan’s death, it also resulted in a fierce firefight between the SAF commandos and heavily armed groups, including the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
