Travancore University (eventually becoming the University of Kerala) was founded in 1937 by the order of Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore and the university's first principal. Sir CP Ramaswamy Ayyar, MP at that time, was the first Prime Minister. It is the sixteenth university established in India. Ten colleges affiliated to Madras University in the state of Travancore became colleges of Travancore University.
