A tiny, prosthetic lens for the eye is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. When cataract surgery is performed, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced.
To improve vision, the lens bends, or refractively, light rays that enter the eye. Make sure your lens is clear. However, if you have cataracts, your lens is clouded. A cataract causes things to appear hazy, blurry, or less vibrant. Your vision is improved after cataract surgery, which removes this hazy lens and replaces it with a clear IOL.
Similar to prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, IOLs are available in a variety of focusing powers. The length of your eye and the curvature of your cornea will be measured by an ophthalmologist. The focusing power of your IOLs is adjusted using these measures.
