Description

Annapurna Base camp (ABC) trek is a dream of most Trekkers but also can be a nightmare if you are not well prepared for it. Do not under estimate the trail, although moderate by high alpine standards there is 5-7 hours hiking daily, up and down steep hills on rough ground. By skipping fitness preparation, you might feel too tired, sore or even injured before reaching your finish line. To prepare for this, begin six to eight weeks before race day with a training program that includes cardio, leg strength and hikes while carrying a weighted pack. This will also help acclimate your body to the rigors of the race.

Yet another significant downfall is that of inebriation. Annapurna Base Camp is at an elevation of 4130 meters, which brings the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) to unprepared tourists. Many of them rush the hike, skipping important acclimatization stops or climbing too fast. The secret is all in the acclimatization routine you follow, keeping yourself well-hydrated and listening to your body. Look out for early signs of AMS such as headache, inability to eat, nausea or dizziness. If these symptoms persist, do not hesitate: rest or descend…! Their ignorance can result in severe health complications, premature ending of your trek or evacuation.
