First Aid for Road Accident Victims - What to Do Before Ambulance Arrives

Every second counts after a road accident, and the help offered at the scene can have a decisive impact on the victim’s chances for survival. In order to help effectively, every willing person must know some basic first aid procedures.

✅ Step 1: Ensure Safety First

Every accident scene has its risks, which is why maintaining some order around the incident is very important. Secure a safe spot for parking your vehicle, turn on your hazard lights and make sure you do not stand on the road.

✅ Step 2: Arrange an Ambulance

Use your phone to call 108 or the local ambulance number. Be ready to give clear information about the accident location, number of injured people, and type of injuries. The more clearly and fast you provide the information, the better the ambulance team can be prepared.

Approach the victim in a non-disturbing manner. In case the victim is unconscious, check for breathing by shaking the shoulder gently. If the victim is not breathing, and you’re trained, you may perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

Life-threatening bleeding demands immediate attention. Place a clean cloth, bandage, or even a handkerchief over the wound and apply pressure. Keep it on as long as possible until a professional can take over.

Exercise care when moving victims of accidents, especially if you suspect injuries to the head, neck, or spine. Unwarranted or incorrect movement can exacerbate internal injuries.

Help to maintain the victim in a calm and conscious state. Engage with them, provide reassurance, and cover them with a cloth or jacket to prevent the onset of shock.
