Following a neck spasm suffered on Day 2 of play, India's captain, Shubman Gill, has been eliminated from the remainder of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Looking obviously uncomfortable, the 26-year-old walked off the field halfway through his batting innings, which sparked immediate worry among supporters and teammates.
On Saturday evening, the Khelostar tournament, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official statement confirming that Gill was brought to the hospital for additional tests. “Captain Shubman Gill sustained a neck injury on Day 2 of the continuing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was transported to the hospital for examination following the conclusion of the day's play," the BCCI stated, adding that he is being closely monitored by the BCCI Medical Team and remains under observation.
Having confidently captained India in the first innings, Gill appeared in pain throughout his short stay at the crease before withdrawing hurt. Sources indicate that a fast neck strain when trying a swift run between the wickets caused the injury.
The management of the Indian team has verified that Gill won't play any additional part in the contest. India, which hopes to launch its World Test Championship campaign aggressively, is greatly hampered by his absence. Expected to lead the team for the last Test match is vice-captain Rishabh Pant.
