Description

The Animal Cruelty Act in India, formally known as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, is a crucial law designed to protect animals from abuse, neglect, and unnecessary suffering. This Act recognizes that animals are sentient beings and ensures their safety, dignity, and well-being across the country. It lays down clear rules to prevent cruelty, promote humane treatment, and establish accountability for individuals or organizations that harm animals.

Under the Animal Cruelty Act, actions such as beating, starving, overloading, abandoning, poisoning, or torturing animals are considered punishable offences. The law applies to domestic animals, street animals, working animals, and wildlife in captivity. It also regulates animal transport, slaughter practices, use of animals in entertainment, experiments, and commercial activities to ensure humane standards are followed.

The Act empowers citizens, animal welfare organizations, and authorities to report cases of animal abuse and take legal action. Police officers, local authorities, and animal welfare boards have the right to intervene, rescue animals, and initiate legal proceedings against offenders. Penalties, fines, and imprisonment are imposed depending on the severity and repetition of the offence, helping deter future cruelty.
