Temporomandibular joint disorder, is also called TMJ disorder, TMD, or TMJ syndrome. By any name, this condition encompasses chronic, acute inflammation in joints that are located just in front of the ears. Our TMJs connect the jawbone to the skull, and are susceptible to the effects of other health conditions that affect joints, such as arthritis, dislocations, trauma, developmental anomalies, and others. Commonly, however, TMJ disorder is caused by certain dental conditions.
