Last time I planned a trip up with family, I decided to try something different — a proper homestay in Shimla, the kind where you get an entire place to yourselves instead of a room number. It changed the whole shape of the trip, honestly. No more coordinating six separate room keys or fighting over who gets breakfast first. We had one villa, one kitchen, one bonfire pit, and nobody had to put on real clothes before 10 AM. What actually makes a homestay worth it A few things I didn't expect to matter as much as they did: Space that's actually yours. Not a suite — a whole house. Kids can run around, the dog (yes, we brought the dog) can wander the lawn, and nobody's shushing anyone in a shared corridor. A kitchen you can actually use. Not a kettle and two mugs — a real kitchen where someone's grandmother can take over and make parathas at 7 AM because that's just what she does on vacation. Somewhere to sit outside at night. There's a specific kind of quiet in Shimla after dark that no hotel balcony gives you. A bonfire and a clear sky do more for a family trip than any amenity list. Someone on-site who isn't a front desk. A caretaker who actually knows the property — where the good viewpoint is, when the fog usually lifts, which local dhaba doesn't show up on Google Maps — is worth more than a concierge in a blazer. The place we ended up staying We found Sukhvasa Villas, a private villa out in Beolia, just outside the main Shimla chaos but close enough that nothing felt inconvenient. It's rented out as one whole unit — sleeps up to 10, so it worked for our slightly-too-large extended family group without anyone having to book two units and text each other about dinner plans. There's a pool, a small gym nobody used but everyone appreciated having, covered parking (which matters more than you'd think on Shimla's roads), and yes, they let us bring the dog. The caretaker on-site ended up being the real MVP of the trip — sorted a bonfire for us on our first night without being asked twice, and pointed us toward a viewpoint that wasn't in any of the blogs I'd read before the trip. Who this kind of stay actually suits If you're going up with more than 3-4 people, or it's a family reunion, a couples' trip that also happens to include your in-laws, or some kind of work offsite where you want people to actually bond over food and a fire instead of a conference room — a homestay just makes more sense than splitting a hotel floor. You stop managing logistics and start actually being on vacation. Would I book a hotel again for a solo Shimla trip? Maybe, sure. But for anything involving family, friends, or more than one generation under one roof — I'm homestay-only from here on.
