India, just like many other developing countries is presently witnessing a rapid increase in its ageing population, and by ageing population, we mean elderly people. Due to the rapid growth of Urbanization, modernization and globalization, the economic structure of this country has undergone a significant change. This has led to a shift in people’s value systems. Driven by aspiration, people, specifically the youth are more concerned about making money and amassing wealth, rather than giving time to their old parents.
This relentless rush for money has affected the social system of our life in a big way. The joint family system is now seen as a thing of the past. The traditional sense of duty and obligation of the younger generation towards their older generation has taken a beating. As a result, the older generation is finding themselves caught between the decline in traditional values on one hand and the absence of adequate social security system for the elderly on the other.
In this scenario, Help Age India, one of the prominent NGO’s in India, devotes itself to the cause of the elders. Through its various welfare programs, it renders service and help to needy senior citizens. Help Age India is aided in its efforts by a pool of volunteers, in addition to its full time employees and offices across India. The volunteers are particularly useful in providing much needed counseling in helping elders cope with situations of neglect and isolation and in spreading awareness about HelpAge India programs and government welfare schemes.
