Fall and spring are the two seasons for gutters to be cleaned out in preparation for the rainy or snowy season ahead. Without proper gutter maintenance, costly repairs can add up from rainwater damage or freezing. Leaves and other debris can clog the downspouts damaging the roof. If water spills over the gutters, it can affect your home’s foundation, siding, crawlspace or basement.Cleaning gutters can be done safely. Here are a few gutter cleaning tips:
When cleaning the gutter, it's important to follow ladder safety as you’ll most likely be using it. Before climbing, inspect the ladder for defects, dents or loose parts and let someone know you are working on the building’s roof or gutters. Use a sturdy ladder strong enough to hold a five-gallon bucket to collect gutter debris. The bucket should be secured with a lanyard. For a single-story structure, use a four-legged stepladder. For a two-story or taller facility, an extension ladder is ideal. Fiberglass ladders are the sturdiest, but are also the heaviest. Aluminium ladder is a good option for strength and support. An orchard and wooden ladder are not recommended because they are difficult to safely balance.Place the ladder on firm ground without debris in the surrounding areas.
Scooping Out Debris
Scoop out any debris from the gutters. A plastic scooping tool is excellent for this job. To minimize ladder moves, attach an extension pole to reach farther, to clean the gutter.Avoid using a metal scooping tool as it can damage the gutter’s bottom and seams.
Utilize a Garden Hose
After the debris isremoved from the gutter, utilize a garden hose to clean out anything remaining in the gutter. A garden hose with a pistol-grip trigger spray nozzle allows you to adjust the water pressure with the use of just one hand.
Protect your hands from painful cuts and bacteria. Using gloves can prevent injuries as debris in the gutter may contain screws, twigs, torn metal shards or other items. Gloves can also protect hands against dirty, rotting leaf debris with bird, pigeon and squirrel droppings that may contain bacteria. Thick, suede glove are recommended as it superior to cotton, thin leather or rubber gloves.
Protect and prevent eye injury with eyewear and goggles. When cleaning the downspout, rats, birds, frogs, wasps or bees can fly out. Safety eyewear is a must.
Rake or Power Wash All Debris off the Roof
Rake or power wash all debris off the roof otherwise the rain will wash all the debris down into the clean gutter, clogging it up again. The debris left on the roof can cause erosion and roof leaks.
Use Rubber-Soled Shoes
When cleaning the gutter, if walking on the roof is necessary, use rubber-soled shoes. They tend to adhere betterand prevent slip and falls. Late morning or early afternoonisthe best times to walk on a roof.
Once the gutter is clean, run the water hose down the downspout at full pressure to free it of small debris. If it is still clogged, tapping on the side of the downspout usually works or use a plumber snake to unclog it.
Be Mindful of Power Line Hazards
Before cleaning the gutter, conduct a visual inspection of any electrical cable to ensure that the protective wire insulation hasn’t rubbed off through years of wear-and-tear by weather and nearby trees. If the cable appears to be damaged, call a licensed professional electrical contractor to fix it. Do not attempt to repair it or clean out the gutter until the wires are fixed.
Hire gutter cleaning contractor to save money
Gutter cleaning is an important component of your overall home maintenance and hiring a gutter cleaning contractor can save you money. An experienced gutter company knows how to take care of your home and can stop any damages to the property with proper gutter maintenance.
