The Goods and Services Tax is a big ticket reform for the indirect taxation system in India. Since it was a proposed change in the written down system of taxation that stems from the British era, it was required to be processed as a constitutional amendment. It was in the year 2000 when the Atal Bihari led government set up an empowered committee to study the reform and propose changes. The GST was the part of the Finance minister’s speech six years later with the deadline for its implementation being set as April 2010.
