Punjab has been one of the most prosperous states in India since independence by way of green & white revolution, however, this achievement was washed over due to insufficient growth of industry in Punjab. Initially, certain industrial segments started well, but due to lack of sufficient and affordable technical manpower & absence of innovative upgradation in technologies, the industries of the state lagged behind as compaState Government University:

University has established a strong nationwide network of more than 1800 authorised learning centres. These Learning Centers act as facilitator & guide to the students. Students visit these LCs to attend Personal Contact Programmes & counseling. Such a wide network of Learning Centers enable employees in transferable jobs to complete their education from anywhere in India.

To address this issue of Technical Manpower shortage and to usher into a new era of Industrial Development comparable to International Standards, the Punjab Government constituted Punjab Technical University (PTU) in 1997 by an Act of State Legislature. The University was entrusted with the responsibility of developing the new generation of technical manpower that can spearhead the industrial development of the State. Punjab Technical University has been formed to be the grooming ground for the future Engineers, Managers and Researchers.
As of today, PTU affiliates more than 400 Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Hotel Management and Architecture Colleges etc. in the State that are approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
PTU understands that restricting technical education to its campuses only will not serve its objective of creating a knowledge rich society. It has firmly understood that latest technical education has to be spread to the general masses. This is how the Distance Education Programme (DEP) of the Punjab Technical University was conceived.
The objective of the programme is to impart affordable, relevant, skill-based & remunerative Technical Education to the masses of the country.
Today, the University has more than 2160 Learning Centres spread across the country offering quality technical education in the fields of Information Technology and Management, Paramedical Technology, Fashion Technology, Hotel Management & Tourism, Media and Mass Communication & Journalism etc.
